OUR HISTORY
Tabu Design began with a clear intention: to build well-made furniture with consistency and care. What started in 1998 as a sourcing and quality control business grew into a full-scale manufacturing facility in Solo, Central Java by 2005, led by Fernando Heras.
Our factory remains in Solo, a region known for its deep-rooted tradition in wood furniture making. Our showroom and sales office are based in Bali, where our team stays connected to the pace of design and the people behind every project.
Over the years, we’ve grown steadily alongside our long-term partners. We’ve continued to invest in our production capabilities, expanding our reach while staying close to our core - delivering furniture that meets high standards, across industries and continents.

INNOVATION THROUGH COMMUNICATION
We believe that good communication is as important as good design. Our management tools are built to support international-scale projects while staying rooted in hands-on production.
From first contact to final delivery, our internal systems streamline how information flows — giving our team a clear, real-time view of each order’s progress. This ensures that every division moves in sync, from planning to production.
We extend the same clarity to our clients. Regular updates, transparent timelines, and easy access to key project milestones mean our partners are always informed — no matter where they are in the world.
Technology also plays a key role in how we track materials and monitor progress. To ensure the best follow up we trace every component back to its source — helping us maintain accountability and deliver consistent high-end quality, project after project.
FROM LOCAL TO GLOBAL
Most of our materials - from timber and rattan to brass, canvas, paper cord, and vegetable-tanned leather — are sourced through a trusted local network. By working closely with nearby suppliers, we stay agile, maintain oversight, and help strengthen the communities we’re part of.
While some components, such as technical fabrics, dyes, or machinery, come from further afield, the core of our production is grounded in materials selected by hand, with care and intention.
This approach gives us more than just control — it allows us to offer our clients a responsive and reliable service. From material guidance to prototyping, and from small batches to large-scale production, we’re equipped to handle complexity while maintaining consistent quality and controlled lead times.

OUR PHILOSOPHY
The full value of Tabu extends beyond just the product — it is embedded in our organisation and the way we work. This includes product development, communication, attention to detail, on-time delivery, responsible production, and a well-curated product with quality post-sales service. INNOVATION provides our customers and partners with differentiated high-quality products, to fit our original design into their own spaces. GROWTH increases our capabilities and the opportunities to benefit our customers and partners from a wide range of design, colours and materials, as well as customized products. RELATIONSHIPS with our customers, partners, associates, suppliers and the local community are at the heart of ensuring a seamless experience and support smooth business operations. RESPONSIBILITY drives us as we are fully accountable for our commitments, actions and the outcomes we deliver. INTEGRITY is a cornerstone of our values; we believe that conducting business in a morally sound way pays off in the long term.
Sustainability & Environmental Compliance
At Tabu Design, our commitment to sustainability is rooted in every decision we make — from material sourcing to production and packaging. We strive to minimize our environmental impact while delivering high-quality, long-lasting products.
- Most of our core materials are sourced locally, sustainably, and legally, with a strong emphasis on SVLK-certified timber to ensure compliance with Indonesia’s national timber legality verification system.
- We maintain a zero-plastic policy across our operations, including the use of minimal plastic packaging.
- Our products are formaldehyde-free and we avoid harmful substances wherever possible.
- We opt for low-impact materials and use solvent-free dyes and pigments when available.
- We have supported reforestation through Trees4Trees (T4T), a non-profit program we proudly donate to help restore natural forest ecosystems.
We believe sustainability starts with making better, longer-lasting products. Each piece is rigorously tested for durability to reduce unnecessary waste and the need for frequent replacement.
Our approach blends craftsmanship with modern technology — allowing for efficient production without losing the natural essence of our materials.
Beyond the product, we recognise our responsibility to the people and communities we work with. We uphold ethical practices across our supply chain and maintain close relationships with our craftsmen and partners. We also comply with Indonesia’s SVLK certification for legal wood, use formaldehyde-free materials, and keep our packaging minimal — all part of a wider effort to do better, at every step.
Beyond environmental efforts, we believe in responsible practices that create long-term value for people.
- We invest in fair, safe, and inclusive working conditions for our team and collaborators in both our head office in Bali and our factory in Solo.
- We work closely with local artisans and workshops, providing sustainable income and skill development opportunities.
- Through our partnerships and community involvement, we aim to contribute positively to the regions where we operate — from material sourcing to final installation.
